Recently we’ve been photographing many actors in the studio under the studio strobes but we always loved the available light look from just inside a large roll up door. With the new studio space designed to accommodate actors in a variety of lighting situations its makes it really easy to bounce from fully studio strobe light to all natural light in an instant.
The below image is lit with four strobes and zero available light. This is a look I’ve been enjoying recently, the intensity and quality of the light is predictable and reliable.
While the above image has been made in the studio under nothing but studio lighting, the below image is lit with the light pouring into the studio through the massive roll up door. Both images feature the actor in the same wardrobe and styling but they have a slightly different feel.
For years I didn’t have a studio and relied solely on the available light, then I had a studio and almost shunned the available light look because I was so focused on utilizing the studio lighting. Now I’ve matured into realizing the sweet spot has been the studio that has a roll up door the whole time.
“Studio or Natural light, we all just want to look great!”
